If you just want something to cram all your files on, this works perfectly, especially if complemented with an SSD for your most used programs and games. Reliability=======I've had this drive in operation for 6 months. This unit was made in Aug-2014.

Formatting under XP is fine, you just don't want to let it create the partitions. Perhaps the negative reviewers could name and shame the companies selling the bad drives, to see if there is a pattern of bad drives being sent out again and again, and also if any particular company is not packaging correctly. GPT support is better in later Windows versions. M.

The only downside is that it's louder than any other hard drive I've had (which, to be fair, isn't that many) - I'd say it's about three or four times as loud as a WD Blue, for reference. Instead, I suggest downloading 'gparted' and running that tool from a bootable CD or flash drive. Since that time, up until a few days ago, it has been used as the parity drive for a SnapRAID array.

Don't use the partitioning that is built-in with WinXP, or the alignment will not be correct and performance will suffer. Screenshot is attached. I used the linux "watch" command to watch the "load/unload" counter in the drive's SMART data with a timer of 5 minutes. With sequential reads of 142 mb/s and sequential writes of 138.

This won't keep it from working but it's a performance issue. I expect at least Windows 7 should support them. This drive is still working fine, it does not have any faults logged in SMART. The access time measured was 15.
