What a beautiful book! I have read "Me before You" by the same author and I liked it, but it is over hyped and stands nothing when compared to this masterpiece. Left me in tears in some instances and made me smile in the others.
The story is divided into two parts: the first one is the story of Sophie, a French woman who lives in a german occupied french village during the period of the first world war. It's 2006 and Oilivia Halston, a young widow who happens to possess a painting that was Sophie's once, goes on to fight a legal battle which reveals to her the history behind the painting and unfolds the story of Sophie's life! I'm sincerely waiting for the day when this book will be made into a movie and will get the recognition it deserves. Historical fictions are not understood by many, which is why books like this one are underated because seeing beauty and love beneath heart wrenching and politically difficult situations is, indeed an art!
The story stops at her arrest by the german forces and then the second part of the book begins which is based almost a century later. This is the story of love which keeps one going in the hardest of times, this is the story of strength when all hope dies and this is the story which makes one believe in it all.
This is a book that reaches right to the heart. I am too much of a world war tales lover and this book satisfied my craving for the same.
The story describes how far these women can go to protect what they love. This is an amazing book.
