the children of hurin

Reviews

Aaron Demeersseman

Although it’s a heroic but also a dark and tragic tale, it’s likely to be more accessible to the modern reader than the ‘high style’ of The Silmarillion. There is a black and red fold out map at the back of the book, as well as some family tree diagrams.

I have been collecting this whole set slowly over the years, they are all lovely books, and look fantastic on a bookshelf. This review is specifically for the Harper Collins Deluxe Slipcase Edition.

i will split this review into two parts, one for the story and the other for the Deluxe edition i have. The long and tragic tale of Hurin, his wife, their son Turin and daughter Nienor comprises the first of the ‘Great Tales’ of Tolkien’s First Age of Middle Earth, set in a legendary time millennia before the events recounted in the Lord of the Rings (which take place near or at the end of the Third Age). i'll put photos up if possible.

There are also many pencil like grey sketches included throughout the book. The paper quality is thick, smooth and white, the text printing perfect and each chapter heading decorated with one of Alan Lee’s monochrome images illustrating the subject matter of the following text. (Including some photos)Hardcover book, with a sturdy cardboard slipcase. I didn't read the book yet, but as you can see Amazon delivered this book in perfect state:- a beautiful matt slipcover without damage- fits perfectly with the other Harper Collins collection of Tolkien- nice pictures on special paper and some black/white sketches of Alan Lee in the book- foldable map at the end of the bookSo according to me a perfect book for any Tolkienlover!

It was subsequently re-written and extended by Christopher Tolkien and published as a standalone story in ‘Unfinished Tales’ in 1980. With light grey boards and dark blue spine the volume is housed in a very rigid matching dark blue slipcase, with gold imprinted spine and motif of Turin Turumbar’s helm in profile stamped on the front board and reproduced on the slipcase. Matching navy blue ribbon bookmark. The story is here re-worked by Christopher Tolkien who has constructed a fully coherent narrative for the tale, avoiding invention but with extensive new detail from his father’s copious piles of notes and manuscripts, to give the reader the most complete and best-ever story of Hurin and his children.
