Reviews

Rachel A Sargeant

It is heartbreaking, hilarious and beautiful. Overall it’s an emotional and heartbreaking story of friendship, illness and grief. Through exquisite prose, the unflinching pain and rawness of grief is interspersed with the humour of lives and experiences shared.

What to say about this book that hasn't already been said? It's four days into 2023 and I'm sure this will make it into my top reads of the year. We All Want Impossible Things is a small book full of humour, sadness and hope, which packs a real punch. I would recommend the book but encourage to check our CW/TW’s prior as it could be distressing for some.

As with grief, it is messy and complicated and whilst the story focuses mainly on the relationship between Ash and Edi, the impact of illness and grief in the wider familial unit is also explored. it made me feel so guilty in parts that they made Edi's passing so beautiful I cried so hard for her and my Mum . Edi and Ash’s friendship is beautiful and it’s lovely and heartbreaking reading their journey.

Beautifully and sensitively written. I wasn't sure I could read this after losing my darling Mum of the same catastrophic disease she was 58 ! The characters were all very interesting, messy and complicated to say the least but with great depth and distinct voices. The portrayal of unwavering friendship and having a solid support system is second to none.

. Fleshed out with subplots and backstories, the story flows well and is easy to read.

𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙪𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚. It made me laugh and it made me cry. but as I started it I quickly realised this is an Author of total understanding & empathy they have most definitely lived through this loss !

! ’I went in blind to this one, I just liked the title and cute cover - next time I’ll do my research 😂 This was a heavy, heavy book! I did find the pacing slow in a parts, but I understand that’s due to the story content and I don’t think it would have worked any other way. The importance of surrounding yourself with love in the darkest moments.
