She finds the little nuances and idiosyncrasies in people’s behaviour and shows us their strengths and weaknesses in a way which makes them incredibly real, often in a heart-breaking manner. Linda had a very difficult thing to deal with in her childhood and her life since has been scarred by this, as her mother’s. I’m not sure it was “tidy”, but it definitely was unexpected. I loved Joanna’s last book ‘Three Things About Elsie’, so I just had to read this!

There’s no-one quite like Joanna Cannon to get deep inside her characters and this is what makes her novels excel over and over again. Linda wonders when he starts keeping odd hours about the same time that young women go missing. You’ve got this main character, Linda, narrating the story. You got the murders and the “whodunit” plot, and then you have Linda’s past and the mystery of what happened to her father.
