However, it’s no longer the place of art galleries, amusements and DFL’s (down from Londoners) that I know and love, but a town that has been left to fend for itself against the ever rising tides. However, if you enjoy a bit of a darker, gritty read then would highly recommend you give this one a go. In a time of climate change, the immigration crisis (last year, 28,526 desperate people are known to have crossed the Channel in small boats), housing chaos, petrol prices etc etc it is only too easy to see this story become a reality! Set in the not too distant future Chance and her family are ‘relocated’ from London to the coastal town of Margate.

This book has put me off reading any more dystopian novels, not because it wasn’t any good, on the contrary it just all felt too real! It demonstrates both the resilience and vulnerability of young people who are at the mercy of the adults who parent and govern their environment. A raw and honest love story, set in a future that feels close and believable in the most devastating way. This book is a reminder on how life can easily shatter and why it’s important to look after each other.
