I personally don't believe that this is a healthy attitude. I have just finished reading Tom Michel's beautiful book entitled the penguin lessons. At the end of this wonderful book tom drew no boundaries between love of humans or animals. This book was bought for me by my daughter and her husband as a Christmas present last year .
A friend of mine who once lived on the streets told me that people tend to care more for homeless animals than for humans. it was money well spent!
To my mind this book is as outstanding to today's readers as Gavin Maxwell's legendary ring of bright water was to readers of the fifties and sixties. I love animals but I also love my fellow humans.
