I don’t grow veggies, or have the kind of budget that means I can be too choosy over what I cook or eat. I have friends who do too, who I'll be buying a copy for this Christmas.
I think the tagline could be a little misleading - “The week by week guide to cooking with seasonal ingredients. ?
To pore over, read, be inspired and uplifted, bring a little peace, structure and pleasure to a disordered and increasingly stressful world. I love it. 5 stars.
The recipes are wide-ranging and though personally I’ll probably never cook many of them, they are interesting to read, with the chef’s comments and the images too. It’s written by Fred Foster, greengrocer and co-founder of Turnips, Borough Market - someone who loves fresh produce, knows fresh produce and shares some of the beauty and delight with us on these pages. There’s plenty of narrative to read, too - interesting brief anecdotes, and pearls of information and wisdom from a real expert in the trade.
Once you’ve got your head around what it’s not, this book is an absolute joy. ” Be aware this is not like the recipe ideas that come with some veg box deliveries (for those who are lucky enough to get a veg box), you know those ones designed to help the inexperienced seasonal cook learn to experiment with veggies they haven’t used before, that might otherwise be left to lie mouldering while we cook our usual spaghetti bolognaise?
That’s how it makes me feel anyway. Have a browse through the images in the product details and maybe you’ll agree? It’s a traditional Almanac in that it goes through month by month, and I really appreciate reading about the seasonal fruit and veg from all over.
