Although Professor Stavrakopoule never suggests the latter, her book suggests to me that these gods were not just figments of the human imagination. . These ancient sky gods could exhibit good human qualities such as wisdom, but mostly they exhibited human weaknesses such as greed, hatred, jealousy, and uncontrollable anger.

The question therefore to me is why these sky gods were portrayed in this way? Suggestions in the biblical text of a tradition that Yahweh is Cain's dad, not Adam (page 155). Possibly they were inspired by severe weather and climate conditions as many are associated with stormy weather.

Despite the fact that this book fell apart before I was half finished reading, it is truly worthy. Spectacular Cometary activity is another possible cause as it is likely this was a far more frequent and terrifying phenomena in the past than it is today. The god of the bible was no different. (Edit: They refunded my money.
) One of God's names, "El Shaddai", traditionally translated "God Almighty", seems to derive from a group of mischievous local mountain deities called the Shadday gods according to an inscription found in a 1967 archaeological discovery (page 21).
She demonstrates quite well that the God of the Bible started life as such a sky god. Do not hide your face from me.
Professor Stavrakopoule's book demonstrates how ancient mythologies frequently represented their sky gods as powerful, but flawed human beings. Knowing it would fall apart I'd still buy it because the words are worth it. I do think the publisher should give us all the Kindle version for free though. Yahweh's ex-wife Asherah (page 148 and *many* others).
