Reviews

Kristel Greer

the concept of them is to put us and keep us in our places’This is one of those books that I can imagine each reader taking something completely different from. She was brought up by her father who provided her with little information about her mother. Another quote that I love: ‘I am a neglectful person. It’s riveting, generous, vulnerable, perceptive, and all good things.

Lydia

As Rose delves deeper into the secrets, she starts to question her own life and relationships which is mirrored in Elise’s journey in America through her relationship with Connie’ which we experience in 1980s flashbacks. This was an interesting look at how secrets and lies can affect both yourself and the lives of those around you. Rose Simmons wants to find out what happened to her mother Elise Morceau who left her as a baby. ‘But roots are conservative anyway .

It also shows Rose’s lack of understanding of her mother or having honesty around what happened to her left lasting consequences in her life and the way she copes with situations she finds herself in, often repeating her mother’s mistakes unknowingly. I can’t, or won’t adapt myself .

I’d spent too long fighting to be the woman I wanted to be, to ever hand her over, to cash in my autonomy. Overall, a compelling read with complex and fascinating female characters dealing with the consequences of being forced to live a certain life, often to their detriment. It’s a story about personhood, motherhood, friendship, absence, and art. .
