It should cover the whole top surface of the mattress but it is slightly small than the size stated so it leaves the edges uncovered. Let down by the size of the product. I ended up getting a bigger size and using it in my small mattress. Excellent

If a child have an accident and is laying on the edge, your mattress will get wet. It water resistant is good on the part which covers the bed but doesn’t cover it all.
