Reviews

Wilde's Cabbage

This really is a powerful and engrossing read and had me so emotional while I was reading it, which isn’t the first time for an Ibi Zoboi read. In today’s social climate this books is a must read and I can’t recommend it enough. Wow! I do love this but being that this is a book told completely in verse I think its powerful narrative could have been amplified further if I had consumed it as an audio book rather than in physical book form.

The poetically and lyrical writing style told the story in a much more powerful and impactful way, but like I said, it matches Amal’s arty and poetical character and truly does feel as though he is speaking directly to the reader, in a way that if this book was written any other way, wouldn’t have had the same impact. I found myself flying through this book so fast!

The paper of pages is good, nice at the touch. I am glad that I chose to do so as I don’t know if it would have affected and stayed with me in the same way as it now has. After watching ‘when they see us’ and learning more about the Central Park Five I was left with a deep sadness that I’m sure will stay with me for a long while yet.

Knowing Yusef’s story you can feel his pain as you experience Amal’s pain in this book. Just WOW! I was worried I would be able to let the story flow as I started reading the poems but it becomes a piece of artwork that tells the story perfectly and I can’t imagine it being told any other way.

Gut wrenching. When it comes these kind of stories I always struggle to write a review, cause often I feel so upset about the injustice that certain communities have to endure and I wish that one day we can really break this circle cause I honestly can’t think how in 2021 there is still so much discrimination. The illustrations and artwork within the book is also beautiful!

If you decide to read this book, I highly suggest you follow up watching the Netflix series When they see us. Inspired by real events, this novel in verses is a moving story about a boy who tries to maintain his humanity while the system tries to charge him for a crime he didn’t commit.

The media could not be loaded. Discovering the story, the history behind this book, the relationship between Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam, discovering who Yusef Salaam is and the history of the Exonerated Five made this book even more captivating. Came without any defect and is printed well. This is one of the best books I have read in a while.
