The problem this year is they are real and human bones, but just whose are they? The plot is a creepy, twister of a ride and I didn’t guess the outcome until right before it showed itself on the pages, which is always good. That is until the remains of a former resident of the village turn up and Jake is begrudgingly brought back into using his police background to find out what this sleepy little part of the world is hiding. Amazing right?

So Jake has been left this gorgeous if the rustic property in the middle of the English Countryside, so he quits his job and failing relationship and heads off to “find himself”. And secondly, you can tell that Stig Abell is a massive lover of crime fiction and thrillers, in the way he has woven many names into the storyline, a real homage to the greats! I enjoyed the easy writing style and the short punchy chapters.

There’s something about a suspicious death in the countryside that makes it feel that little bit darker. A tiny village in the middle of no-where becomes his new home. Jake settles into his new circumstances of a smaller world with relative ease, with no phone, no mod cons, not missing being cut off from the outside world. I hope there will be another crime fiction novel, and indeed another Jake Jackson novel would be superb.

“Nature and death are no strangers to me really, and I’m close to one and coming ever close to the other. The more he digs the more someone doesn't want the tru th to come out and try to scare him off on more than one occassion Just why does someone care so much about bones from years ago? Abell manages to inject his debut with an unexpected quality of moreishness in what is largely a slow burn mystery which only quickens its pace in the concluding last quarter of the novel. Excited for Stigs next novel.

This was so beautifully written! Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC. The way that Stig has written the description of Little Sky and its surroundings, is absolutely magical and captivating, the surroundings and setting came alive from the page really well. His uncle left him his quaint little cottage in the middle of a picturesque country setting cut off from the hustle and bustle of the city, where there is no phone, internet or TV reception.

Jakes uncle leaves him property and assets in his will - the problem is it will involve living miles from the nearest neighbours or small village and going off grid! He is propelled towards his move to a more remote, survivalist lifestyle when he inherits his rural country home from his Uncle Max whom he somewhat knew with his sporadic visits throughout his life. This is also a fantastic view into one man’s psyche and how he learns to cope with the isolation after years of living in the City. His isolated country house and its stunning surroundings become part of his new routine as he finds his footing and adapts to a slower paced life.
