I love the use of the first person narrative in Frederick’s perspective throughout majority of the novel, as we really get an insight as to how manipulative and possessive he is with Miranda, as well as him finding ways to make himself the victim and try to justify his immoral actions which leaves the reader into this twisted web for who to sympathise with. I had to read this book for an English class but I really enjoyed the story and the writing of John Fowles

Fowles has successfully enticed the reader with this monstrous, arrogant character. The use of an epistolary style by Miranda’s diary is a crucial element; it gives another perspective to the readers from the unreliable narrator, however the writer still illustrates the male potency he has over her by making her diary entry vague and much shorter than Clegg’s parts. Book came on time and in good condition. I bought this book alongside Lolita for my English Literature coursework, and I really enjoyed reading this; this is something that I would still purchase even if it wasn’t for my coursework.
