Absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down. A fab read! Spat at. Knowing these characters are based off real women makes the persecution and torture difficult to read and it will tear open a witch wound in many readers, but all the violence aside, there is also a wonderful tale filled with storytelling, magic, myth and sisterhood.

There are subtle references to real magic, but most of the strange happenings can be attributed to greed, lust and envy. This was a very ambitious undertaking, to try to bring a fresh offering to what is now a hugely popular sub genre of historical fiction and I think the author does a solid job. I loved Ingeborg who bought a little bit of innocence into the story and Maren who seemed a very feisty, independent lady. If you’re interested in books relating to witch trials then you will enjoy this one.

Together we lift ourselves up, we give each other strength. Beyond the history is excellent story writing! Both trying to get through their lives of fear, struggle and loss. Are they culpable?

In the meantime, Zigra's daughters try to help her to escape but they are also subjected to abuses beyond comprehension for being merely associated with a suspected witch. ‘Who do you think the witches are, Ingeborg?

This is one of my longest reviews and still there’s so much to say about this feminist staple of a book. The author does a great job of setting the scene and I really felt transported to Norway like I was experiencing everything alongside the women. I don't want to include any spoilers but the ending is intensely satisfying, I enjoyed how everything was wrapped up. : The mention to the Sámi made me research them and find they’ve always been persecuted and pushed to conversions, it made me want to find more and read from their natives and hear their songs.

It is well-written and provides a good balance of fact and fiction, without losing the essence of Vardø’s bloody history. Defiled and abused.

)Thank you for the gifted e-arc and for having us on the Compulsive Readers tour. Where to start! They who’ve withstand, these natives to the Laplands with their gods and reindeers, with their songs and colors.
