Do consider trigger warnings as there are some very detailed descriptions, including those of a sexual nature which, whilst uncomfortable to read, serve as a reminder of the power imbalance and abuse involved. Despite the troubling subject matter, this memoir hooked me from the very start. Such a brilliant read I couldn’t put it down and very brave to put it all down like this

I hope that speaking his truth has helped bring Gibson some healing and closure. Written in unrelenting detail, Gibson's memoir is a sometimes difficult yet powerful read that exposes the many people who failed him as a teenager whilst bringing to light the damaging and long-lasting effects of grooming. As it unravels, Joe's story will evoke a whole host of emotions—sadness, frustration, outrage—but it's such an important and worthwhile read. In ‘Seventeen’, Joe Gibson recounts the formative experiences of his final school years involving his relationship with a teacher.
Gibson's ability to transport us to the mind of his teenage self in such a vivid way makes for a compelling yet harrowing read, to the point where you have to remind yourself that this is not a work of fiction.
