And that’s what got me. These two stories are recorded and written down by Kevin, who wants to discover the long lost story of his late grandmother. Lee's novel is a disturbing and uncomfortable reading that documents the atrocities of Japanese soldiers that are still rarely talked about today.

Important to learn about, important to read, but powerfully raw and emotionally heartbreaking. I started the book crying and ended it crying. It shattered my heart and it’s stayed with me ever since.

The book tells the real tragedy of “comfort women”, still little studied or known in the West today, and explains what they have been through, how they felt, how this has slowly changed them and has brought out their once innocent and optimistic spirit, now destroyed and closed. The remaining third of How We Disappeared is narrated by Kevin Lim, a bullied young boy who may lose his sight. It’s the story of a woman who survived the most horrific circumstances yet survived.
