About this deal

Title

It is the evening of sixteen-year-old Melody's coming of age ceremony in her grandparents' brownstone. Tristan wishes Malachi would stop pining for Pamela. Jing-Jing Lee was born and raised in Singapore and graduated from Oxford’s Creative Writing Masters in 2011. In a neighboring village, seventeen-year-old Wang Di is strapped into the back of a troop carrier and shipped off to a Japanese military brothel where she is forced into sexual slavery as a "comfort woman. In the year 2000, her mind is still haunted by her experiences there, but she has long been silent about her memories of that time. m - 10 p. What she sees and experiences will haunt her present nearly sixty years later. Lee’s work comes from a wish for lesser-heard voices to be included in the mainstream narrative. A beautiful, stunningly ambitious tale of endurance, identity, and memory, for fans of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Georgia Hunter's We Were the Lucky Ones.

Reviews

Nivedita Dhankhar

And that’s what got me. These two stories are recorded and written down by Kevin, who wants to discover the long lost story of his late grandmother. Lee's novel is a disturbing and uncomfortable reading that documents the atrocities of Japanese soldiers that are still rarely talked about today.

Laura

Important to learn about, important to read, but powerfully raw and emotionally heartbreaking. I started the book crying and ended it crying. It shattered my heart and it’s stayed with me ever since.

The booktrail

He has no one to spend his days with anymore. The book tells the real tragedy of “comfort women”, still little studied or known in the West today, and explains what they have been through, how they felt, how this has slowly changed them and has brought out their once innocent and optimistic spirit, now destroyed and closed. The remaining third of How We Disappeared is narrated by Kevin Lim, a bullied young boy who may lose his sight. It’s the story of a woman who survived the most horrific circumstances yet survived.
