About this deal
Praised as ‘visionary' by conservationists and landowners alike, Rebirding sets out a compelling manifesto for restoring Britain's wildlife, rewilding its species and restoring rural jobs – to the benefit of all. Contrary to popular myth, large areas of our countryside are not productively farmed but remain deserts of opportunity for both wildlife and jobs. Winner of the Richard Jefferies Society and White Horse Book Shop Literary Prize Only six percent of our country is built upon. We have lost the messiness and loose margins that birds love to call home. It paints a picture of hope for a nation where the conservation community, the farming community and the hunting community are so commonly pitted as opposing forces despite having so many mutual goals. Rebirding is an in-depth look at the space we have in the UK, how much of it is unproductive farmland, and what we could achieve if we used just a small percentage of that space to bring wildlife back to Britain.

If you are a large landowner, read this book. I dream that my grandchildren might see Elks and Pelicans and hear Wrynecks and Cuckoos, that they may experience a slow return to rich, untidy, meandering landscapes.

An audacious vision & manifesto for revitalising Britain's nature & rural economies. 5⭐#rewilding #wilding #benedictmacdonald #rebirding #whatimreading #conservation #bookreview #booksofinsta #bookreviews #naturewriting Initially, we are given a picture of ages back, of how things were for birds, and wildlife in general, and there are fascinating and rather appalling facts about how over the last few centuries, we in UK have managed to reduce or wipe out so many of what should be common species. Buy it, read it, and share it.

Rebirding by Benedict Macdonald is my favourite rewilding book so far. Chemicals have played a devastating role too.

It was a compelling read, so I read it in 2 days. Having looked at what we have lost - and why that is important - the author meticulously works through the major land uses in Britain, looking at how each could make changes to improve the land use not just for wildlife - but for job creation.

You may not agree with all of Benedict Macdonald’s ideas and arguments, but his book is a passionate, informed and important intervention in one of the most pressing concerns of our time, and it deserves serious attention and a wide readership. If you pay taxes, and have any interest in where your taxes go, read this book. However, Macdonald is not defeatist, and nor is he afraid to be controversial.
