until he heard about plans for an old disused site to be converted into a nature trail. Even when I thought I knew the culprit (ah, did I, or didn't I) Candlish kept me guessing such is the superiority of her prose. Filled with deception, love and flawed characters, l flew through this tense mystery trying to work out what wasn’t right, the twists that I didn’t see coming ……. ) I couldn’t help but feel it read like a Ruth Rendell back in her heyday - when I got to the afterword the author does actually mention inspiration from A Fatal Inversion ( BRILLIANT book !

I thought i had worked it out a few times, but the twists and turns kept coming until the grand finale! While I didn’t warm to the characters and found them quite unlikeable, certainly none that I would like to be friends with. I always come away with a book hangover, as I find there’s so much to delve into below the surface of the gripping plot. For me though, the elements of male friendship that were explored through Rick and his relationship with Rollo (plus his colleagues to a lesser extent).

Wow I’m speechless! I loved how the format flipped between Rick’s historical mid-90s life and the present day, told through the eyes of Alex (someone who clearly has a link to the previous events).

The author has done a terrific job at creating a sense of place and time throughout The Only Suspect. The setting for both is the same: suburban Silver Vale. A superb thriller.

This book is another example of how Candlish can take a group of ordinary people and essentially shove them down a spiral staircase into hell! She works in the same office building and her beauty is ethereal. Told in dual timelines (which had me a bit confused at first ) but when all the pieces came together I wasn’t expecting it. Another element that keeps me returning to Candlish’s books is her ability to weave so much social commentary and thought-provoking themes throughout an accessible and highly engaging, commercial novel.
