It creeps up on you, perhaps as quietly as seven-year-old Arthur climbs into Panenka's bed at night. This would not be the time to meet someone who might come to mean something to you, but a man needs a haircut, and you did not expect the barber to be a woman, or that the woman will be Esther. You kiss the cross that you wear around your neck and artfully chip the ball into centre, but instead of diving left or right the goalkeeper remains exactly where he is…The game is lost. A beautiful story with some of the most well drawn and relatable characters I've ever read.

Instead of kicking the ball to the left or right of the goalkeeper, the taker gives a light touch underneath the ball, causing it to rise and fall within the centre of the goal, deceiving the goalkeeper who is counted on by the taker to have guessed a side and committed a dive away from the centre. In fact, it is in danger of being relegated. Imagine that you play for a small town football team, the kind of place where the beautiful game means everything. I can thoroughly recommend this book.

I read this straight after reading Leonard and Hungry Paul and enjoyed it just as much. Things that you may not have even noticed until he draws them to your attention. Is it any surprise that you find you are unable to cope, that your marriage can’t survive the strain?
In football, the Panenka is a technique used while taking a penalty kick. It is not possible to let anyone close, because you have a habit of hurting those you love. The town turns against you.
If you’re lucky, they arrive when you need them most. The writing is brilliant.
