We see what happened from 56 days ago onwards from the points of view of both Ciara and Oliver and then we have the up to date story being told from the view point of one of the Gardaí investigating what has gone on and who the body in the flat belongs to. This is one of those thrillers that you will not be able to guess what’s coming. As with most thrillers it’s the twists that really make the story and they are handled so well here with some little reveals throughout the story and then a fairly big twist towards the end. I loved the different timelines which enabled the reader to understand not only the characters but the events of the past and why they acted the way they did.

It’s superbly written and has wonderfully complex characters. The concept of this had me intrigued from the moment I first heard about it. Little nuggets are revealed as the story grows, some take you off down one path and you think ” aha, I know who did what” then a few pages later that theory is blown out of the water. Although 56 days is set during the Pandemic, which I wasn’t sure I was ready to read about, it is really the perfect scene setter.

This books has twists galore, which you don’t see coming, well I didn’t anyway 😂. Ciara and Oliver meet in a Dublin supermarket just as Covid-19 reaches the country. I loved the characters in this wonderful book.

There was clearly more to both of them than meets the eye and couple with Howard’s writing style I was gripped from beginning to end. By the time the lockdown is announced they’ve been on a couple of dates and neither is keen to have to suddenly go without contact for any length of time so it seems the logical idea to move in together, just whilst the lockdown is in place.

The authors writing style really makes you feel like you are in the flat with Oliver and Ciara, both such interesting and complex characters. It’s definitely one of those “just one more page” thrillers. 56 Days just has it all from edge of the seat shocking situations to love and budding relationships and best of all twists that run throughout, not just at the end. At several points I thought ” oh blimey, just talk to each other!

I love that Ciara and Oliver were quite complex characters. As time goes on it seems that neither of them has been entirely honest and now, 56 days later, a decomposing body has been found in Oliver’s apartment.

The Covid lockdowns were such a unique and strange experience for us all, with everyone dealing with them in different ways and I was keen to see how Howard had used that as part of her story. Full of flaws and doubts that keeps them both trying to out guess and out manoeuvre each other. It is not constantly mentioned yet plays an intrinsic part to the whole basis of how this story unfolds.
