Reviews

Katie

Sixteen-year-old Ruth is awaiting trial for murder. Loved it.

C D Major

I really enjoyed this book. I’m so glad I kept going. A delicious gothic read set in the Victorian era full of suspense and murder.

Maggie

The ending stumped me. This gothic novel had been languishing on my shelves for a while when I decided to pick it up as my fiftieth read of 2019. Nevertheless, Dorothea wants to study her head for her own investigations as to whether prominent shapes on the head can be identified in criminals early (crazy, I know).

Emma's Biblio Treasures

A recommended read from me! So is Ruth mad or a murderer? Like 'The Silent Companions', I constantly found myself asking if Ruth really had supernatural abilities, if she was lying or if she was deluded.

Miss K. ⭐️

The author highlights many important issues of the time in this novel. The Silent Companions was one of my favourite reads last year so I began this full of high expectations.

I found about Laura Purcell when I read ‘The Silent Companions’, and was so excited when I saw this one! This book entails twists and turns and compelling descriptions of the Victorian era, including social class, dress, sickness and health.

I am usually a bit of a sucker for a romance as a side story, but I actually really enjoyed the fact that Dorothea's romance was only briefly explored. Favourite Quote:"But instead I shared the fate of all girls who are poor of pocket: I was tied to my work, like a needle tethered by thread. This book is set in two parts, which I love. I found Dorothea's academic interest in phrenology to be an interesting aspect to the storyline.
