It is ceramic and has a gold leaf foil which I have a feeling might chip off if you aren't careful. Although they show this size with utensils if you cook like me, then having a crock that holds 4 utensils just doesn't make sense.

Just love them. High quality! I plan on using this particular size as a vase when I have flowers but otherwise I currently have all 3 of them on my mantel. Well worth the money

That is about how many I could fit without jamming them in there. I just threw some balled up paper inside to the right height, then a flat piece of paper on top.
