Reviews

Being in possession of both the editions, I think this is more of an apples to oranges comparison. As for the subject matter, I do not think my two cents will add or take away anything from the consensus on the greatness of Tolkien's literary megaliths. Why go for this particular edition when the version illustrated by Alan Lee(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; 114th edition) is the Holy grail against which any illustrated edition of 'The Hobbit' will always be weighed? Illustrations are from the introductory scene of Thorin and Co.

I was nearly put off by one of the other reviews which said the item was not as described but that has not been my experience. Bought for my 7 year old daughter. ’Who could not be lured into the depths by that, especially this extra special hardback edition?

That said, I would rate this edition an overall five star with impeccable binding and print quality. Measuring around 18 cm x 24 cm x 3 cm, the pale green cloth-like cover has a subtle touch of gold colouring to the front & spine that mischievously glints in the change of light. I’ve purchased this for my nieces eleventh birthday and I am blown away by how lovely it is. , the troll encounter episode, Bilbo's meeting with Gollum in the Misty Mountains and Smaug with his treasure horde in Lonely Mountain.

The book also includes maps of Wilderwood and Thor's Map. This is one of our favourite childhood tales (mine & hubby) so this is the perfect addition to share. What a shame, as it was purchased as a Christmas gift
