Going from dull black & white to bright light, and the station gets happier. The writing style and the texture of the words are of such quality and richness. The illustrations in this book are what drew me to it.

I saw when ordering it was 48 pages so knew it was a slightly longer-form read for the kids but I like that and feel a lot of books these days are too short. I would suggest a slightly older child in the age group suggested bY DK.

The book goes from grey to colour as each life is touched by the station cat. Honestly, after I read it I felt a wave of emotion and joy. This feels like a classic story and the illustrations are so evocative of the period it’s set.
They are so lovely and the book can be used with younger readers to just admire the pictures without covering the Dark story line. In the words of our 7yr old…“In the station everything is really dull and everyone is really sadBut when the cat comes along it cheers everyone up and brings colour to the placeThe more people it cheers up, the more colour is brought. A tale of despair and darkness without actually revealing the reasons behind the characters grey lives. Our 10yr old loved it too.
I ordered it after seeing a lot of great twitter reviews and blog posts but it exceeded all my expectations. However for the older reader, despite being a little bleak the book has a heart warming twist as each of the characters interact with the kitten at the station.

I think this might be a masterpiece. It transported me, and I can’t remember the last time a picture book did that ever. These characters can chose to proceed with their onward train journeys as they repeatedly do or be distracted by the colour and mystique of the kitten.
