The church ladies are worried for their husbands, the reverend had predicted her arrival and chosen one of them to persuade her to come to the fold. That nurturing came from Pearl, who 15 years on from the murder of her daughter Jude was hoisted from the pits of her grief by Sugar and their friendship. Sugar was so misunderstood yet so lovable, each main character in this book was so unique and thoroughly explained.
