Reviews

Emma's Biblio Treasures

Their scenes together were some of my favourite in the book and I was rooting for them every step of the way. Her protagonist, Durie, is an 18th century feminist icon and the supporting cast of female characters don’t disappoint either.

Mrs S

Durie, bless her, saved me on many an occaision. Her desire to become a bonesetter in a man’s world marks her out. Her magnificent debut, The Smallest Man, was one of my favourite books of 2020, so I had high expectations for this book.

I squirm when I see it on 24 Hours in A&E so there were scenes where I did feel a bit faint but it’s so good, the writing and characters kept me going. You don't feel weighed down by the historical details, they're just woven in beautifully and just as they should. Atmospheric, evocative, ambitious and compelling, That Bonesetter Woman is an epic masterpiece of historical fiction that I highly recommend.

Quinn creates a strong connection between the reader and protagonist, making us feel deeply the pain that inhabits her as she struggles with being different, trying to understand the behaviours of others, and other challenging events in her life. She is desperate to become her father's assistant, but his is set on offering the position to his son, Durie's younger brother. He’s the kind of love-interest we dream of: someone who really gets you and accepts you for who you are.
