𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗜'𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮. A mystery as the lighthouse was locked, no signs of any struggle, 2 clocks had stopped at 7. 𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻.

Three women, left behind, with their own stories to tell. 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁. It feels like a locked room mystery for the men, a prison of sorts.

And whilst a tragedy like this you would think would bind these women together, it didn’t. This book is so beautifully written and loved this mysterious atmospheric and haunting story. 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻. I love Lighthouses and who would think a book could make such a tale about them.

𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 . I felt each of the characters throughout the book was distinct and unique, but the female characters in the story seemed especially strong. You won’t find characters better drawn.

Once inside the Maiden, they have a job to do, a lamp to light and relationships to build. Jenny, wife of Bill, believes, until his body is found that he is still alive. That's what other people can't do: they can't do things slowly and with meaning.

These women would have been ashore raising children or on their own waiting for their husbands' return from their stint on the lighthouse. I thought this was a real treat of a reading experience and I felt moved by the ending too. The characters in the story were the real draw here too. Michelle, girlfriend of Vince (Vinny), believes he must be dead and has since married Roger and had two daughters; she is unhappy and still thinks of him.
