Outside of that, it’s a varied and wondrous world. There is light and love and hope here as well, even when our characters are at their lowest.

I would say that there is a lot not to like about this book, especially in terms of the brutality and sexual violence, but seeing the characters go through it and come out the other side, and looking at their response, the way they change, sometimes physically as well as emotionally, was so enthralling that it added a counter-argument, as opposed to specifically a counter-balance. The good doesn’t excuse or outweigh the bad, but it addresses it in a way that doesn’t shy away from what sadly exists in this world, and indeed in our own. In terms of content, there are some graphic sex scenes that may be hard for some to swallow, and this also includes rather descriptive violent rape. There are two narrators who complement each other, and the story, very well.
