As other brands, it works best with slight tooth to the surface but even over slick acrylic it handles pretty well. Very very happy Not at all gritty like many others & covers pretty well on most grounds. Works like a charcoal pencil but feels more like a wax pencil.

Having tested a lot of white charcoal pencils recently - General's is by far my favourite now. Not always easy to find or cheap to but in the UK - but well worth the effort. Amazing pencil, sharpens well and draws perfectly.
I use the white charcoal to enhance highlights to gouache & acrylic paintings - General's does that without the grit & scratch of other pencils I've used.
