And my two youngest children enjoyed helping me! ). She did not disappoint. With equal parts passion and precision, she takes ordinary vegetables, kitchen staples and a handful of essential global ingredients (I can never look back now that I've found Zaatar and Pul Biber), to create picture perfect dishes that pack a punch.

From dips to dhals and pastas to puddings, the pages are filled with familial narrative; of grandmothers, mothers, sisters and aunts, of shared recipes and communal cooking. The photography throughout the book is stunning too.

I would definitely recommend purchasing this as well as her previous books ! Having settled down with a cup of tea to read the introductory chapter in the same way I would read a novel, I set out the business of deciding what to cook first. . So it is not an exaggeration to say to say that the Burnt Courgette and Cardamom Dip with Crispy Capers (page 25 of the book) that I made this weekend is THE most delicious dip I have ever tasted.

I love dips, and when I read Ravinder's words 'I'll admit that I don't mind a dip over a proper dinner' I decided a dip had to be first (and also that I would embark on a mission to make her my friend. And I am not a good cook.

I was certainly hooked immediately by both the beauty of the writing in the introductory chapter, the opening words of each chapter and the first dish I tried. ♥ And it was easy to make. If the Jikoni cookbook was a feast for the soul, with its nourishing stories and aspiring dishes, then Comfort and Joy is a real feast for the body.

In this book, Ravinder brings together her signature style of storytelling, with a collection of everyday vegetarian recipes that are elegant yet completely practical. I’ve already made a few and can not wait to make more. This book has something for everyone seeking comfort and joy, not just on our tables but in our lives too. I cannot wait to choose something else to cook.
