Fantastic read , through extreme adversity , true love wins through ,What an act of kindness can lead to ,,Couldn't put this read down Very well written and down to earth cruelty and tragedy. 2,552 5* reviews at the time I read it must say something for it.

She is an abused wife who works at the shop as a volunteer to escape her husband Rick. She is the daughter of the local doctor who is an extremely strict father. The following chapters enlighten us as to how Billy came to be an orphan and why Alice Stirling decided to adopt him.

Yes the story flits back and forth between 1939 and the 1970s but I felt it flowed relatively smoothly and for me it was a real page turner I read it in just over 1 day. The story then transports us back to spring 1939 and how Billy Stirling came to write ‘The Letter’ in the first place. I didn't give it a five star,as the last part of the book seemed detached in writing and context to the first two thirds. This was just a lovely read!

There is a sense of desperation in that short letter which captures her attention from the beginning, whilst she struggles in her marriage with an abusive and alcoholic husband. I bought it cheap on Amazon and was amazed to get such a good read. It is impossible to ignore the huge difference between Rick's and Billy's personalities.
