Both the ethernet side and usb-c side seem to fit properly with a bit of wiggle. Overall great product, and great value for money as the adapter is really cheap in comparison to the others I have seen! You will know the connection is operational by seeing an icon pop up in the top right like this: <->

Overall a good product but personally it's not going to gain me faster internet speeds to my phone. I'll purchase an apple thunderbolt 3 to TB2 and see if the speed is due to this adapter.

With my 2015 MBP and the apple thunderbolt to Ethernet, I was getting 950+Mbps up and down. It did however, show as "iPhone" in the connections part of system preferences - this did not effect performance but could be quite confusing for somebody who didn't know what they was looking for. Cable Matters customer service replaced the faulty adapter rather quickly. The little led isn't too noticeable which is good.
