Poignant. Adored it!

Turner

All of the characters have a real depth to them, the tiny personality traits that make them who they are a shining testament to Beech’s talent. It’s truly incredible. And as her home is being repaired, she volunteers at a local Flood Crisis centre, struggling to recover lost memories of her childhood that continue to elude her grasp. Although there are some very dark aspects to this book, I also think there are equally as many heart-warming aspects too.

Louise Beech writes with a power that enchants and enraptures, the spell she casts settling over your mind, beautiful and exquisite. Catherine-Maria is a strong, funny, fantastic character. Catharine-Maria’s house has been flooded in the terrible Hull deluge of 2007.

Raw. Maybe tissues and a huge bar of comfort chocolate should come with the next book though. The insight into people suffering trauma, their needs, their will to survive and how it’s easier to help others than to help yourself. ) to prop my things on.

Everything else I pushed upstairs. Even now I can remember the smell of the dirty water as it stained the walls, the sight of the carpet bubbling up as the water rose, and I can especially remember the panic as I scrambled to get my furniture up off the floor.

This novel is funny and dark and completely beautiful. At one point I made stilt-like legs from anything I could find (that was already ruined!

It’s a terrible thing to happen and so this is why this novel really struck a cord with me – as it probably will with hundreds of others. As my old home was flooded a few years ago, I felt a strong connection with this novel, I could especially empathise with Catherine-Maria.
