CAROL MCGRATH

Burning Island is the story of a young couple's relocation to Corfu, both fed up with employment in miserable damp and cold London, longing to experience a new destiny. But is it really?

I found this book exceptionally moving and engaging and became drawn into both periods equally. James becomes deeply involved in trailing recipes whilst Amber seeks out furnishings for the new restaurant and as she to his chagrin at times becomes very close to two wonderfully artistic women who have several exquisite furniture and craft shops. Will their business and importantly their marriage survive? Amber is an ex lawyer and a creative force.

It's a poignant and unusual story filled with secrets and surprises, peopled with richly imagined various personalities. Suzanne Goldring has ably managed three narratives within the novel, that of two rescued children and their protectors, that of the little girls' sister and family's horrifying journey into the unknown thinking it's to work in Germany and that of Amber and James and their attempts to run a business in a beautiful foreign land. Lots of jeopardy and filled with tension, it is highly reccomended by this reader as a perfect escapist and thought provoking read. I loved all the scene setting in Burning Island past and present.

I was impressed with the contrasts between an occupied island of 1944 and it's more idyllic setting in the early naughties. Unfortunately James is himself seduced by his friendship with Greg Richards and his equally suspect business advisor. I was there entirely. The novel is page turning and impressively structured.

However, in the search for the right Island location, they make suspect friends as well as those friendships which must endure and grow. They plan to open a restaurant. Amber becomes fascinated by little written about events that haunted Corfu during 1944.

This will lead to circumstances with unforeseen consequences for Amber and James. It's beautifully portrayed.
