The software works great and is solid even on the newest update of the MAC OS SONOMA 14. When using the SXFI mode when watching movies or gaming the sound quality - even with a low budget set of headphones, is amazing. That's the exact same feeling I just got moving away from my X-Fi Titanium! LOVE THIS THING.

If I were to upgrade to the x5 down the line though, Creative will have to have a very compelling new feature set, or they'd have to remedy most if not all my cons above The difference is night and day. The centra dial is nice and big, it feels tactile, something you can grab and adjust nicely - the dial has fine controlled increments.

0. The X4 has all the features I need, optical out and a great headphone DAC at a way cheaper price than the AE-9. When I click headphones or Set Default on Speakers, I should be given the same DD toggle.

Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to just "feel right/satisfying" to have that physical indication of what you're doing on the unit itself at a glance- The apps (yes multiple) suck. If they make those changes I would say this is literally perfect.

1 with the Z906, you need to click Playback then click Speakers (line out) and SPDIF Out you need to click "Set Default", then go to Device click Encoder and select Dolby Digital Live. SXFi is a gimmick but it has its uses, just not really for me. If you think the built in sound is all you need.

Wow - I can for once, without a shadow of a doubt, lay to rest my worries that this X4 could not compete with my "old" X-Fi Titanium PCI-e sound card, it doesn't compete, its much better! The box itself isn't small, but a pleasing desktop piece if you're into that kind of thing. Would also be okay with a set on each side of the device.

All I can say is this is a purchase well worth it. I bought a Scarlet 4i4 and then moved on to the Wave XLR because I wanted to stream and the Wave XLR has amazing software that replaced Equalizer APO and Voicemeter because the Wave XLR supports VSTs and audio routing. hope this help someones time.
