It explores decisions Rachel and Jack made and more importantly how they are dealing with the aftermath and the shadow it cast over their lives. I was completely absorbed.

A few months into the pregnancy and something happens where she realises that she doesn't truly know the man that she's having a baby with, and she's keeping a secret from him too. The characterisation was very skilful with enough of a backstory to draw you in but at the same time enough withheld to make you keep turning the pages lone after - well, in my case, long after your husband starts yelling at you for leaving unwrapped presents all over the dining room. Set in both Newcastle (where Rachel is from) and Oban (where Jack is from) this slow-burning, psychological thriller is claustrophobic, bringing in primarily the two main characters and their family and friends, including Rachel's sister Kate.

It sat in front of me, beckoning me like the envelope in Rachel Anderson's handbag. Blissfully in love but struggling after the death of her mother and breakup from previous boyfriend she thinks cheated on her, Rachel reads a mysterious email of Jack's and suspects he is hiding something from her.

' But I didn't do that. Five stars from me! However Rachel also has her own secret, something from her past that she struggles to confront and that Jack knows nothing about.

Dee Warner

When I finally got to open it I was not disappointed. The revelations are shocking and sad, dealing with life and death moral issues, and the novel considers how lives go on after such tragedy. One of the reasons that this book appealed to me is that on quick skim in the bookstore (yes, an actual book store!

The scenery descriptions of Rachel's hometown of Newcastle and Jack's hometown of Oban are wonderful and you can really picture yourself being there. Does Rachel really know Jack well enough for this? I loved the dual settings of Newcastle and Oban and the skilled evocation of Jack's family particularly.

That has got to be the sign of a strong author who has many fine novels ahead of her. And there's a fabulous set of book group questions at the end of the novel, well-crafted, thought-provoking, a value-added extra. Her true feelings come under the microscope when she discovers his secret by chance, and begins to dig deeper.
