I thought no one could understand how I was feeling in my new sober life…until along came “We Are The Luckiest”. Laura McKowan wrote a beautiful, raw memoir about her journey to find sobriety, however, it is relatable even if your struggle isn’t with alcohol. I was fortunate enough to receive an early copy of We Are The Luckiest by Laura Erin McKowen. In this novel Laura McKowen recounts her struggle with getting sober and it’s a truly powerful read.

It is the difference between existing and actually living. ” This is something I’ve struggled with - especially in romantic relationships. After starting my sober journey 18 months ago my thoughts have been a confusing mess of struggle, cravings, raw emotions, and isolation.

Her chapter titled “Push Off From Here” was so brilliant, it’s a concept I will apply to any hardship I arrive at. Unlike other memoirs, "We Are The Luckiest" doesn't focus on the gory details of a decline to rock bottom; rather, Laura shares her story in a way that gives hope to anyone struggling to overcome anything-not just substance abuse. It’s so good, I am already reading it a second time. I think the most magical part of this book is her sharp yet tender analysis of humanity, connection, and fear; and by sharing her own healing process, she offers a place for readers to heal and to become their most authentic self.

The perfectly titled book, We Are The Luckiest, was my game changer to life. Laura's story and writing is one that's full of an honest voice that every human should read no matter what your situation - sober, sober curious, or know a loved one or best friend who's looking at their life and seeking and understanding why you might want to numb.

We help eachother by letting go of the shame and stigma. Things like approval seeking, people-pleasing, not voicing my opinions, and avoiding conflict at any cost - these were all dishonesty masked as something sweeter and more socially acceptable. Thank you for sharing your story and light with the world, Laura.

By sharing what she learned and what she came to realize about herself during her struggle toward sobriety, Laura McKowen has opened my eyes, helping me to embrace all of my crap and love myself in spite of it. To be honest, I’ve been single for nearly three years because I’m terrified. We really are the luckiest! Laura has a unique, straight-forward way of writing that made me feel like I was having a face-to-face conversation with her.

This book is about so much more than just drinking and sobriety. Laura is an incredible writer & shows true, raw vulnerability in her first book. And once you learn to see the truth, you can begin to heal your heart, mind and soul; and that brings peace, acceptance and freedom like you've never known.
