There's an obvious power dynamic between them. I love the author's note at the beginning, framing this as a part Stephen King homage, setting up "Carrie" to snap at the onset of perimenopause instead of puberty.

Some of the symptoms are quite severe like delusions, visions, and hearing voices. My one downside is NOT about the story though, I like my books pristine. There, the perimenopausal symptoms get even worse, she's haunted by murdered women and her own past.

It was tough to know how to feel about Mary, she's a complicated narrator. Toward the last third of the book, the plot is BANANAS and it speeds to its climax.

Nadine is verbally abusive and mean, but then as soon as Mary is on her own, there's a transformation. This story is gripping right from the beginning. OverallGood read and I would recommend it.

The characters, especially Aunt Nadine, are larger-than-life. But there's more going on here, with the desert and cults and serial killer podcasts. The dialogue exchanges between Nadine and Mary are intense.
