It appears the author is testing public opinion. Bosch and/or Connelly is looking for a dramatic exit to his continued exploits by allowing him to finally solve his 'white whale'. I've been a fan since The Black Echo and Desert Star is a worthy entry in the series.

Having followed Bosch from the beginning with The Black Echo, both he and Connelly have aged accordingly. Fans of Bosch will love this book. Personally I would prefer Bosch on his own but it is obvious that Connelly intends on Ballard (and perhaps his daughter Maddie) taking center stage at some point in the future.

This novel concerns two open/unsolved murder cases and each one is riveting and exciting. The plot propels itself and there is zero fat or filler within the 400 pages. Every chapter left me dying to read the next one.

I read most of the book in one mammoth late night/early morning binge because I couldn't close the book. Desert Star is a thrilling page turner of a Bosch/Ballard crime story. Connelly's recent move allowed Bosch's visit to Florida from LA as part of the case .

My bedtime reading! The book was also interesting with the introduction of DNA genealogy to solve cold cases [as was recently reported in Toronto, Ontario where police solved 2 40 year old murder cases] with this new and innovative investigative method.
