So when she has the opportunity to go to London, she jumps at the chance to follow his trail. She has long been almost certain he isn’t really dead, but she can’t shake the feeling that something’s being kept from her. In stories of love and loss, of trauma and hope, told from care homes, living rooms, classrooms and kitchens, Carr discovers that while each of their stories is utterly unique, they are all born out of the same desire for human connection. Sparking a profound conversation about a universal emotion, which may simply be an inevitable part of life in an increasingly disjointed world, he questions what we can do to build stronger human relationships, and to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Once in London, Jo meets Henry, a broody, Beatles-hating photographer who’s an intriguing mix of quantum physics and pseudoscience…and just might have the key to finding her father. Would definitely recommend this book, it's such a lovely, emotional read! Alternating between then and now it grabs your attention all the way through. Another excellent book by Mike Gayle. THIS.

This book feels like it’s written for exactly this moment in time. I fell in love with Hubert Bird, the eighty-four-year-old man at the heart of the story. "And in that moment, as he attempted to stem his tears, Hubert realised something he hadn't quite understood before now: he was lonely, really lonely and most likely had been for a very long time.

BOOK! It is also a story about giving yourself permission to live again after loss. During this read I realised I find books with dual-timelines challenging. I was also fortunate to take part in a chat with the man himself as part of the Tasting Notes Book Club, where he charmed every one of us with his wit and intelligence.

He creates characters that you fall in love with, you root for, you cry for. I read it greedily as I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Half way through I literally had to stop reading as my heart was breaking 😭😭 this book has so many emotions and I loved it alot more than I thought I would! This is a beautiful story about loneliness in both elderly people and young people and how all ages can come together and be friends and mean the world to each other. This wasn’t an easy read at times, and there were certainly points where I was reaching for the tissues with a knot in my tummy. That said, as the story started to develop, I was totally engrossed.
