As these young men, key figures of the French Revolution, taste the addictive delights of power, the darker side of the period’s political ideals is unleashed – and all must face the horror that follows. And Camille Desmoulins: a genius of rhetoric, charming and handsome, yet also erratic and untrustworthy. Camille Desmoulins, charming and erratic, is a writer of genius with a taste for violence. Hilary Mantel Collection 3 Books Set (Bring up the Bodies, Wolf Hall, A Place of Greater Safety) A very good first edition with some age spotting to the tops of the pages. From the double Man Booker prize-winning author of Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror & the Light comes an extraordinary work of historical imagination – this is Hilary Mantel’s epic novel of the French Revolution.

Dr Charlie Mansfield
Le lycée Louis-le-Grand features in the early scenes of the novel of the French Revolution by Hilary Mantel (1992) A Place of Greater Safety so it is a popular spot for book lovers when on literary pilgrimage to the Latin Quarter in the 5th & 6th arrondissements of Paris. In real life de Robespierre started there aged 11 in October 1769, staying until he was 23, studying to be a solicitor. I would recommend this book. The different personalities are well developed, with a vivid eye for details.

I chose this for my lockdown read and I found it hard to put down! It covers the lives and fates of three key figures from the French Revolution and takes them from their childhoods onwards- encompassing families and friendships as the plot moves inexorably toward and through the events of the Terror. My paperback copy safely arrived from Amazon in time for Valentine's Day 2018. Le lycée Louis-le-Grand is on la rue Saint-Jacques which traces the route of le cardo maximus de Lutèce, the great Roman south-to-north axis road of Paris.
As a reader you can sense and feel the fear as fortunes change through the revolution. It is to this grammar school that both the young de Robespierre and Desmoulins are sent in the story.
