I took my time opening the box and just noticed a damaged corner. Unbelievable, fast, terrific customer service! It is a beautiful book. Throughout there are beautiful an colourful pictures as well as many illustrative drawings which really add to the book, all printed on very good quality paper.

I’m almost ashamed to say that being able to name familiar British trees has been a hole in my education up to now, but this beautiful heavyweight book written by Michael Scott, Ross Bayton, Andrew Mikolajski and Keith Rushforth; and published by DK goes a long way to addressing that shortfall. DK’s strap line is “For the curious” and that certainly applies here, with many happy hours of browsing possible whether you choose to read it from cover to cover or dip in like a reference book.

The book doesn’t stop there by describing the animals, insects and birds that some attract; as well as religious, historical and in some cases industrial significant of certain species – that’s why the length varies, and a feature I like a lot rather than trying to match a standard page count and having to miss out important details as a result. The back cover describes the book as “An Immersive Guide” and those are very true words as the book draws you in. The book is principally divided into three large chapters, with the first having an unusual remit of Hoe Trees Work. Again, beautiful photos and drawings abound, showing leaves, fruits, locations found in and historical uses.

I highly recommend it to all my friends and family. There is a section on their evolution and another on how they defend themselves. Update - I returned the damaged book and Amazon replaced immediately with a perfect copy.

You can choose to skim or concentrate, and I’m pleased that I’m already able to finally recognise some of the more common trees. Of course with 60,000 species to choose from the book concentrates largely on the less exotic ones. Each tree has sections on what group and family each belongs to, its typical height and spread, and descriptions of leaves, fruits and bark. Let me know if this review is helpful, thank you for reading it.

This really is a beautiful book to get lost in, and at £30 I think it’s all of its money – you will not be disappointed. This book from DK publishers, does not disappoint. Given they are essential for producing the Oxygen we breathe as well as producing food and being living accommodation for many animals and insects you get information on classifications, with the book revealing there are over 60,000 species.
