This book was around when I was little but for some reason I never heard of Morpurgo. It is sure to capture a young child's imagination and keep them spellbound. There is some written French dialogue which might be tricky for younger children to understand so they might need an adult to help This story of a boy who saves a lion cub and brings him up in his own home is a page turner.

My kids received a recommended reading list from their school and The Butterfly Lion was on it. The way the whole narrative is knitted together is masterly and I loved the twist at the end. It’s a lovely story; similar to Christian the lion if you’ve seen those gorgeous clips on YouTube. It is not to be missed.
I particularly liked the way the author deals with the developing relationship with the girl he meets when he is parted from his unusual pet. We already had it on the bookshelves so we read it together. A heartwarming happily-ever-after and lovely illustrations by Christian Birmingham.
Michael Morpurgo has produced another hit with this work.
