Reviews

Zoe Ley

Never before have I felt the need to write a review but I felt compelled to and urge everyone to read it. indeed, in so many ways he navigates a higher understanding that may never of happened had it not been for their heartbreaking tragedy. Ben, a lifelong advocate of nature, turns to its beauty and healing powers to help his journey through grief.

What an extraordinary epitaph for the altogether magical Iris. Whether it is treating our environment more kindly or rewilding your own garden to allow nature to flourish, there is something we can all take from the book. This chasm between his journey and the ordinary reader is quite wide at times, but also at the heart of the story is the loss of a beloved child, and that grief is universal.

He searches for answers and / or traces of Iris all around. His journey through that grief, whilst buffeted by financial means, is still a journey many of us experiencing loss, can understand- the questioning of where our loved ones have gone and whether we will see them again and trying to maintain a sort of connection to them is all very real. Perhaps, just perhaps, God is indeed an Octopus - omnipresent through various tentacles of our interconnected world.

It almost becomes a manifesto of types. He also explores different religions, rituals, and rites to see if that brings him. Ben Goldsmith and Kate Rothschild, from famed banking and financial families, lost their first child, daughter Iris, in an accident at Cannwood farm. No amount of money can change that loss.

Whilst many suffered hardships in the pandemic, he enjoyed a commune of sorts on his land and a bubble of time to heal. Through quite unimaginable pain and loss, and exquisite, yet raw honesty, you are transported on Ben’s journey of acceptance in a mesmeric and deeply moving way. Many of us were able to spend more time in nature during the pandemic, and it had a restorative effect on so many people.

I have learnt so much about the ‘nature-of-all-things’ and the spiritual hope that is open to all of us, and I have been utterly moved forever after reading Ben’s beautiful and eloquently written story, both deeply sad and uplifting, it is admirable that such a book now exists. #godisanoctopus #bengoldsmith #TandemCollectiveUk This is one of the most moving and at the same time uplifting books I have ever read.

Thank you to Ben Goldsmith for sharing this book with the world. These aspects are wonderful. any closer to the truth of what comes next or any closer to his daughter.
