You do have to buy separate batteries. I don't know how this is so magical but it really works. For tummy time, we'll put it in front of him. The figures go up and down in such a way that it looks like there is water inside.

Thank you! Our little boy had one of these provided by hospital for his cot when he was poorly and he wouldn't settle without it once we came home. It also will shut off after 30mins or you can easily press the button to shut it off. The button on the right turns on the light without making a noise and I use it a lot to look for the pacifier at night.

The best thing: - It has two volume positions, both with low power but plenty to make you listen well without disturbing. - The child is hypnotized until he falls, the effect is relaxing and very cool. I had my doubts when I saw the negative comments but I took a risk!
