It took me a while to get used to the spelling but realised it’s totally integral to the story and cleverly done. I loved Newt, the main protagonist, who is strong, smart and capable. This is such a unique book in many ways. You get the feeling that you’re closed in and it gets quite claustrophobic sometimes – very atmospheric!
A well deserved Waterstone’s prize winner! The way it’s written will surprise you as soon as you open the book. Bearmouth is an original, compelling tale of friendship, loyalty, love and social injustice. The setting is unusual, below ground, dark and ominous.
The characters and interactions between them are brilliantly well-rounded and believable. There were some dark scenes but they are necessary to get across the living conditions.
