The "bottom" edge is smooth while the sides are covered with a nicely textured surface to improve grip. I have "normal" sized hands and either my thumb or my finger tips are going to be on that gap. When I first received the box, I was surprised by both the size of the box and the weight; these are very beefy grips. One reason is perhaps because this allows the grip to be used more safely even with thinner bars.

Picture shows. However, when used with a larger bar, it leaves a somewhat awkward gap. Orange yes If you have larger hands, you may want a product designed to fit standard Olympic bars.
