Obviously in the current social climate the book raises objections from many reviewers as it is about the stereotypical orphanages and questionable adoptions. The characters are so lovable and the storyline is very intriguing, as an adult I just could not stop reading the books. The children are forced by Gassbeek line up for inspection by prospective adoptive parents as often as necessary.

I’d say a good buy because my daughter will re read this over and over. Illustrations are simple but goes nicely with it. Milou has the “Sense” - she isn’t quite sure what this is, but she gets a tingling feeling when she is in danger, and this helps her and the other children. For the rest the adventure story is full of mystery and suspense even though the narrative was slightly slow at some stages.

I found this book exciting, well written, and affirming to children. In essence it’s all about caring for each other and teamwork to deal with challenges and for the main characters to avoid a life of servitude. Sem is a kind boy who sews beautifully. He is thrilled by it.

Djilly L.

She is a magnificent young girl who is adamant that her parents have only temporarily left her at Gassbeek’s terrible orphanage. Fenna, the smallest, is sweet, and a selective mute - like the author herself was as a young person. Egbert is a cartographer who draws remarkable maps.

Andy

The main character is Milou. At the same time, they search to uncover the mystery surrounding Milou’s family.
