Love of Life
Barbara is truly becoming your close friend as you are reading her struggle and misery over Arnold. There is nothing more powerful than being able to do whatever you want and not being “locked by your own success” as Barbara mentioned in the end.
“Come on, girl, love yourself more, forget him already, love your life”, I thought through reading. It’s definitely a must read for those who is interested in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s early ears in America.
BUT towards the end of the book I had realized that it’s not mocking at all, but the way to make the reading more colorful and entertaining and this is just how Barbara feels and remember him. Being an European immigrant myself (36 years junior to Arnold and Barbara though), at first I was irritated by a constant mocking his accent. Sometimes you are very surprised and not in a good way to discover that, for example, she called him once for a simple favor about Boston library pass and not only he was rude, starting a conversation with “What is it that you want”, but he never helped with such an easy situation.
Written by a college professor, professional writer, the book had impressed me with a very broad vocabulary, intriguing style, humorous remarks, honesty. Unless you are a Native American, you belong to an immigrant family as well and it’s only a matter of how many generations ago your family had arrived, so don’t mock a newly arrived fellas.
